Mission

Dance is a modality of communication that goes beyond language. As such, it is my goal to allow my work to act as an extension of myself as a queer alternative artist. Elements of camp and horror line the edges of the unapologetic body of my work. I wish not only to transport my audience to a realm unknown but also to push the limits of my own abilities as a storyteller and as a chameleon of sorts with each of my performances. I seek to facilitate an environment and an experience that allows me to broadcast my emotions in a way that words never could, to find comfort in the uncomfortable, to find beauty in the ugliest of places, and to push against the expectations of traditional aesthetics. Most importantly, I seek to foster honesty, vulnerability, and integrity within myself, my fellow dancers, and my audience.

About Peter

Peter Pattengill was born August 24th, 2000 in San Diego, California. Pattengill began taking ballet classes at the age of eight after growing tired of waiting for my younger sister’s rehearsals to be over. From that time on, Peter studied primarily classical ballet in the vaganova technique, however, he also studied jazz, modern dance, and latin dance. At the age of fifteen, Pattengill was accepted to the Houston Ballet’s pre-professional program through the Youth America Grand Prix’s New York finals. Pattengill studied with the Houston Ballet for three semesters, where he spent upwards of fifty hours a week dancing ballet and working alongside the professional company. After leaving the Houston Ballet, Peter returned to the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts for his senior year. There, he studied Limón release technique alongside ballet and choreography. During this time, Pattengill transitioned his training from classical ballet to more modern and contemporary techniques and even choreographed his first full length group choreography.

Currently, Pattengill is attending the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University as a part of their inaugural BFA dance program. Here he is spending a large portion of his time and energy devoted to achieving groundedness and amplifying my body awareness. While here, Pattengill is continuing to study Modern, and Ballet as well as furthering his personal exploration of choreography. Pattengill has recently choreographed a number of solos for himself and others  that have been performed on numerous occasions all over Baltimore, including the Peabody Dance Festival.

Since beginning dance, Pattengill has gotten the opportunity to work with a number of choreographers and directors. In his time at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, he worked with choreographers such as Christopher Huggins, Lillian Barbeito, and even the late Donald McKayle. Outside of school, he has performed works by John Neumeier, Jessica Lang, Francisco Gella, Stanton Welch, and Kevin Jenkins. Since attending Peabody, Pattengill has already worked with choreographers such as Yin Yue, Kate Harpootlian, Tracy Kofford, Daniella Agami, Katherine Helen Fischer, and Pat Taylor.
